Animal figurines and the Easter bunny

May 14th, 2009

One of the earliest forms of art work excavated during archaeological digs, besides clay pots, were different figurines.  These included figurines of people, deities, as well as animal figurines.  Some of these animal figurines were created before the Sumerian civilization of Mesopotamia, dating as far back as the Neolithic period in human history! (Approximately 10,000 BC)

But why figurines?  Surely, humans of the time had more important things to do, such as searching for food, finding cover from Earth’s relentless elements, and fighting off those pesky sabretooth tigers!  There could be several answers to this, but two are worthy of closer consideration.

Stoneware vs Pottery for Polish Pottery

May 13th, 2009

Polish pottery’s popularity has grown in the 2000’s.  Advertising has increased as well, introducing some of us to unfamiliar terms.  Among the confusion, pottery and stoneware lead the pact.  Many people wonder is pottery the same as stoneware?  Is it just a different word with the same meaning?  Is one more descriptive than the other?  So I have done a little research to help clarify it.

In a nutshell, pottery is a general term for any ceramic ware item that a potter has created.  This can include everything from mugs, plates, bowls and other practical items, or it can include decorative pieces such as artwork, home accents, or cabinetry doorknobs.  Stoneware, on the other hand, refers to a man made stone.  It is defined as a material made by man.    Read the rest of this entry »

Polish Pottery in my kitchen

May 12th, 2009

I welcome everybody to my blog.  I have Polish Pottery in my kitchen.  I do not yet have a complete set for 8 people, but I’m building up to it.  And so I created this blog to share my excitement about Boleslawiec Polish Pottery.  In the following month you will learn a great deal about this cherished pottery.

You may not know that Polish Pottery is some of the most collected pottery in the USA.  There may be many suppliers, but it seems that only a few manufacturers have penetrated the US market.  Most distinguished is Zaklady Ceramiczne z Boleslawcu and Ceramika Artystyczna (not to be confused with Ceramika Artistyczna Wiza).  A company profile will be written soon for each of them to help you understand and correctly identify pottery pieces.

I wanted to mention my affiliation to Pottery Street.  Pottery Street imports Boleslawiec Pottery directly from Poland and has a mail order distribution throughout North America.  Although one print catalog has been mailed, future catalogs are uncertain at this time.  Online catalogs will be coming out.  Bloggery Street is Pottery Street’s official blog.

There is so much I want to share about Boleslawiec pottery, it’s hard to decide where to start.  However if there is a topic you would like discussed, please write me an email or leave a comment.  Or if you would like to become a contributor to this blog, please contact us.  We would like a variety of contributors to reflect the different styles and ideas people have.

Please sign up to this blog and become a member!  We would love to hear from you.
